ABOUT THE ROLE
Why this role exists
We're recruiting for a growing studio that designs wayfinding, signage and environmental graphics for high-end hospitality: hotels, resorts, branded residences, restaurants and bars, lifestyle destinations, and large mixed-use developments.
Right now, one designer handles both halves of the job. They work out where signs need to go and then design what the signs look like. As the studio grows, that combined role has become a bottleneck.
This position takes on the first half of the process. You'll own strategy, plotting and documentation, so the design team starts every project with an approved, fully worked-out sign location plan instead of building one from scratch.
Reports to: Design Director / Project Lead
Team rhythm: You'll join daily meetings with the team during Australian business hours (AEST/AEDT).
THE PROCESS YOU'LL OWN
01 — Strategy
Map the user journey Work through the plans as a first-time guest, a returning guest, a staff member and a delivery driver. Find the decision points where someone stops or chooses a direction. Set the destination hierarchy and the naming logic behind every message.
02 — Client Approval
Get sign-off on movement Present the journey mapping and circulation logic to the client, the operator and the design consultants. Settle arrival sequences, back-of-house separation and the operator's naming conventions before anyone draws a sign. Get written sign-off.
03 — Plotting
Decide sign types and locations Turn the approved strategy into a sign type schedule and marked-up floor plans. These cover identification, directories, lift lobby level IDs, directionals, guestroom numbering, restrooms, F&B, spa and lifestyle facilities, front-of-house and back-of-house, statutory signage and disclaimers.
04 — Handover to Design
Issue a package the designer can work from directly Deliver a complete, coordinated package with plots, message schedules, quantities and notes. Stay available through design development as the plot changes.
WHAT YOU'LL DELIVER
Working from architectural and interior floor plans, you'll produce and maintain:
Sign Type Schedule
The scope of work, with numbered sign families and quantities by level. Items are flagged as TBC, N/R or additional sign types.
Signage Location Plans
One drawing per level. Each sign is coded, numbered, counted and positioned, with sign type keys, orientation and legends.
Message Schedules
The full text on every sign face (side A and side B), with translation columns for multilingual projects.
Coordination Notes
Items that need input from the interior designer, lift consultant, fire consultant, façade team or operator.
Illumination
Internally illuminated, spot lit or ambient lit signs, power and data requirements, and recessed or freestanding screens.
Revision Control
Issue history, drawing numbering conventions, and clean revisions that can be audited across document sets of 50+ A3 sheets.
Shortlisted candidates can see a sample documentation package that shows the expected standard.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
An interior design background is strongly preferred, and architecture is also a good fit. You can read a set of construction drawings fluently. You understand circulation, sightlines, ceiling heights, door swings, wall build-ups, structural grids, FF&E layouts and level changes, and you know what can actually be built on a wall.
Essential
-
A degree in interior design (preferred), architecture, environmental graphics, industrial design or a related field
-
3+ years plotting signage or working on wayfinding, environmental graphics or interior documentation packages
-
A high level of skill in Adobe InDesign, the main documentation tool, plus Illustrator
-
Confidence reading and marking up architectural, interior and MEP/RCP drawings
-
AutoCAD and/or Revit for reading and extracting base plans
-
Rigour with numbering, quantities, revisions and file naming. You catch the error in the schedule before the client does.
-
Clear written English, and the confidence to present your logic to a client and defend it
-
Availability for daily team meetings during Australian business hours (AEST/AEDT)
Highly Regarded
-
Hospitality experience with five-star hotels, resorts or lifestyle destinations
-
Wayfinding for large mixed-use, retail, healthcare, aviation or transport projects
-
Working knowledge of statutory and accessibility requirements: evacuation plans, fire codes, tactile signage and braille, AS 1428 or equivalent, ADA
-
Familiarity with signage fabrication methods, materials, illumination and mounting details
-
Bluebeam, SketchUp or Rhino
-
Multilingual projects and translation coordination
-
Experience across international jurisdictions, such as Australia, China, the Middle East and Europe
HOW YOU WORK
You think in systems and stay calm when things are unclear. You're comfortable being the person who asks the operator what a room is actually called, three times if needed. You're happy to spend a day walking a journey in your head before you draw anything, then document it so precisely that nobody downstream has to guess.
YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS
Learn the system
Get to know the studio's sign type taxonomy, drawing standards and templates.
Own a live project
Handle plotting on one live project from start to finish, working alongside the current designer.
Issue for review
Deliver location plans and a message schedule set for client review.
Make it repeatable
Create a plotting checklist that speeds up turnaround on the next project.
